UFCW Local 1059 has faced significant turbulence over the last decade, primarily centered on accusations of leadership “collusion” with employers and internal procedural failures. While high-level criminal racketeering convictions are more prevalent at the UFCW International level, Local 1059 has been the target of repeated Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges from its own members, particularly following the contentious 2022 and 2025 Kroger contract negotiations. Rank-and-file workers have alleged “voter suppression” and “bad faith bargaining,” notably after leadership required three separate votes on nearly identical contracts to avoid a strike. Furthermore, legal challenges have surfaced regarding illegal dues deductions, with a federal settlement in early 2025 addressing claims that the union coerced employees into signing membership forms under threat of termination.
